
At the beginning of the 11th century the von Sternbergs appeared in Franconia and were considered nobles. Becoming Hungarian, they abandoned region under the heel of the Tartars and settled in Livonia. There they received the nickname of “Ungern” (Hungarian) and from the 7th century were known as von Unger-Sternberg with the title of Baron conferred to the brothers Woldermar, Othon, and Reinhold from Queen Christina of Sweden.
Coat of arms: Quartered with another shield overlying the center. In the first and fourth, in a blue field, three golden fleurs-des-lis; in the second and third on a red field quatrefoils (shamrocks). On the central shield a six-pointed star of gold that overhangs three hills all on a silver field.
Ulrica von Ungern Sternberg (1772-1847) married Baron Carlo Gustavo Stael von Holstein (1761-1816).
