Coat of arms of the Andrault de Langerons, Marquises of the Coste da Reistop. “Of the general coats of arms.”

The Andrault de Langeron family is very ancient and very noble. Up to the end of the XVIII century they dwelled in France; passing thence in Russia partly because of the French Revolution, but especially because this country constituted the ideal field of action for the young Alessandro Andrault de Langeron who had an adventurous spirit, great courage, much political ability and other gifts in the humanities and arts. In Russia, as we will see,he reached the highest peaks both militarily and politically and is considered the founder of the Russian branch. He was the grandfather of Sophie Andreault de Langeron who married Nicola Stael de Holstein.
The family is cited in official documents dating back to 1336. In the 15th century they received the feudal village and Castle of Langeron situated 7 km from St. Pierre des Moutiers, of which now exist only ruins. Through matrimony and other reasons, the titles of the Family are: Andrault Counts de Langeron, Marquises of the Coste, Barons of Cougny, of the Fertè Langeron and Sasty. The title of Count was recognized in the Russian branch.
The coat of arms, quartered, has in the first and fourth, three spurred wheels on a blue field in memory of the three Crusades in which members of the family took part, and in the second and third quarters, three red bands on a field of silver crossed diagonally by three fleurs-des-lis on a blue band.
Motto: “Alors content.” [tr: roughly, “Now I’m content”] Phrase spoken by one of the Andrault de Langeron crusaders, dying of combat wounds sustained during the attack in which Jerusalem was conquered.
