In 1430, Mourza Zhaan, nicknamed “the Baran,” abandoned his Tartar countrymen from which he descended to come to Moscow from Crimea, and to place himself in the service of the Grand-Duke Vasili the Blind.
His descendants were named “Baranov.”
For services rendered in war (Deodor Baranov died near the city of Kazan 1552 and Gregory Baranov died during the German capture of Marva) the Baranovs received some fiefs in Estonia and lived on their estates in Waatz.
Barbara Helene von Baranov married Fabian Ernst Stael von Holstein (1727-172).
Coat of arms: An antelope on a red field with his feet on a green lawn.
